১৭৯৮ সালে প্রকাশিত William Wordsworth ও S.T. Coleridge এর Lyrical Ballads নামক কাব্যগ্রন্থের মাধ্যমে ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে Romantic Period এর সূচনা হয়। William Wordsworth ও S.T. Coleridge কে Pioneer of romanticism বলা হয়।

William Wordsworth

Poet of nature, Poet of childhood

তার বিশাল আত্মজীবনিক কাব্যকর্ম (Poetic Autobiography) The Prelude. W. Wordsworth তার দার্শনিক কবিতা The Recluse এর ভূমিকা হিসেবে যুক্ত করার অভিপ্রায়ে এটি লিখেছিলেন। কিন্তু The Recluse তিনি শেষ করতে পারেন নি। তার একমাত্র নাটক The Borderers.

  • এটি একটি lyric poem বা গীতিকাব্য। ১৫ এপ্রিল ১৮০২ সালে জঙ্গলে ঘুরে বেরানোর সময় Wordsworth ও তার বোন একটি Daffodil (হলুদ বর্ণের পুষ্পবিশেষ) এর একটি লম্বা সারি দেখতে পান। সেখান থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েই Wordsworth এ কবিতাটি রচনা করেন।
  • এখানে Daffodils দ্বারা বোঝানো হয়েছে Nature has a healing power to sorrow stricken heart বা প্রকৃতির নিরাময় ক্ষমতাকে।

• Tintern Abbey ***
  • পূর্ণনাম: Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey.
  • কবিতাটি প্রকৃতি নিয়ে লেখা। এটি Tintern Abbey-নামক মঠের প্রাকৃতিক দৃশ্যাবলির ওপর ভিত্তি করে রচিত। এতে কবি লক্ষ্য করেছেন ছোটবেলায় তার প্রকৃতি প্রেম ছিল ভাবনাহীন, আবেগাপ্লুত এবং অনুভূতিপ্রবণ। কিন্তু বয়স বাড়ার সাথে সাথে তিনি প্রত্যক্ষ করেছেন মানুষের নানাবিধ দুঃখ-কষ্ট তাঁকে সমভাবে পীড়িত করেছে। এতে তাঁর মন অভিজ্ঞতায় পূর্ণ হয়ে উঠেছে। এর ফলে তাঁর প্রকৃতি প্রেমের ধরনে পরিবর্তন এসেছে। এখন প্রকৃতি প্রেম অনুভূতি প্রধান না হয়ে আধ্যাত্মিকতায় রূপান্তর ঘটেছে।
  • কবিতায় কবি তার বোন Dorothy কে উপদেশ দিয়ে বলেছেন – Nature never did betray the heart that loved her.
